Discuss your move with your boss.

If you have to move to a new area on short notice, not only will you need to contact your moving company quickly, but it is important to also speak with your employer about the situation. There are many ways to go about doing this, and by being proactive, the situation can go better than you would expect.

It is important to put in your notice of departure as soon as possible if you can no longer work with the company. This can be difficult, but you may want to give two-weeks notice, as it is the typical standard, and will likely keep the relationship with your company on good terms. If you cannot do this, explain to your employer what the issue is to the best of your ability. This could help keep members of your company friendly if you deal with them down the road.

Continuing work after moving
If you can continue working in your new location, it may be a good idea to explore your options. Some companies allow people to work remotely, instead of being in the office. If this is already the policy at your company, inquiring about this option could help keep you employed, and may also be something that your superiors want. The move may end up going very well. Depending on your field, your location in the new area may help the company expand and create connections in a place they didn't initially expect.

While some companies don't have the option of working from home, there may be other offices in the area you are moving to. In that case, it could be a good idea to ask for a transfer. By doing this, you will be able to pick up where you left off. Depending on your situation, as well as company policy, you may actually get a bit of time off to take your move and get settled.

Remember, your bosses will likely be receptive of your situation, especially if you give them as much time as you can. Additionally, if there is a family issue involved, you may not need to go into details. Giving respect to your employer's situation may help them be more receptive to your own problem.
